LithosphereLithosphere is the official bulletin of the Fallbrook [California] Gem and Mineral Society (FGMS). Lithosphere is published monthly (except July and August) and is sent to all members of the Fallbrook Gem and Mineral Society as part of their membership. In addition to communicating announcements and other information to the members of our society, Lithosphere is used to publicize ourselves to prospective members and to other gem, mineral, and related societies.Accordingly, reciprocal exchanges for the bulletins of other gem and mineral societies are welcomed.

How Lithosphere Got Its Name Choosing a name for this bulletin turned out to be the most difficult part of putting the thing together. We went through several prospective names over a period of many months but none of them seemed quite right. It was easy to pick a name that focused upon one or two aspects of our society's interests; but we wanted it all--a name that covered as many of the disciplines within our hobby as possible. We discovered that the problem of choosing an appropriate name centered around the fact that earth science is one of the most diverse of the sciences. The study and appreciation of the earth encompasses not only geology, mineralogy, and gemology, but mining, paleontology, chemistry, physics, crystallography, mathematics, astronomy, history, photography, mapping, engineering, ... well, you get the idea ... and although the primary focus of this bulletin will be in the areas of society activities, mineralogy, and gemology, it was the editor's intention to include articles on many of these related topics as well. So, what about the name? After considerable head-scratching, it occurred to us that nearly all of our society's activities deal with the scientific study and artistic exploitation of the outermost shell of the planet; the earth's crust; the lithosphere. So Lithosphere it is--at least until the membership decides on something better. and see the pictures in full color or to see a past issue.
